Population Games and Deterministic Evolutionary Dynamics

چکیده

Population games describe strategic interactions among large numbers of small, anonymous agents. Behavior in these games is typically modeled dynamically, with agents occasionally receiving opportunities to switch strategies, basing their choices on simple myopic rules called revision protocols. Over finite time spans the evolution of aggregate behavior is well approximated by the solution of a differential equation. From a different point of view, every revision protocol defines a map—a deterministic evolutionarydynamic—that assigns each population game a differential equation describing the evolution of aggregate behavior in that game. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the theory of population games and deterministic evolutionary dynamics. We introduce population games through a series of examples and illustrate their basic geometric properties. We formally derive deterministic evolutionary dynamics from revision protocols, introduce the main families of dynamics—imitative/biological, best response, comparison to average payoffs, and pairwise comparison—and discuss their basic properties. Combining these streams, we consider classes of population games in which members of these families of dynamics converge to equilibrium; these classes include potential games, contractive games, games solvable by iterative solution concepts, and supermodular games. We relate these classes to the classical notion of an evolutionarily stable state and to recent work on deterministic equilibrium selection. We present a variety of examples of cycling and chaos under evolutionary dynamics, as well as a general result on survival of strictly dominated strategies. Finally, we provide connections to other approaches to game dynamics, and indicate applications of evolutionary game dynamics to economics and social science. Multigame effect in finite populations induces strategy linkage between two games.

Evolutionary game dynamics with two 2-strategy games in a finite population has been investigated in this study. Traditionally, frequency-dependent evolutionary dynamics are modeled by deterministic replicator dynamics under the assumption that the population size is infinite. However, in reality, population sizes are finite. Recently, stochastic processes in finite populations have been introd...

Deterministic Evolutionary Dynamics

Deterministic evolutionary dynamics for games first appeared in the mathematical biology literature, where Taylor and Jonker (1978) introduced the replicator dynamic to provide an explicitly dynamic foundation for the static evolutionary stability concept of Maynard Smith and Price (1973) (see the entry on “Evolutionarily Stable Strategies” in this dictionary). But one can find precursors to th...

Pairwise comparison dynamics for games with continuous strategy space

This paper studies pairwise comparison dynamics for population games with continuous strategy space. We show that the pairwise comparison dynamic is well-defined if certain mild Lipschitz continuity conditions are satisfied. We establish Nash stationarity and positive correlation for pairwise comparison dynamics. Finally, we prove global convergence and local stability under general determinist...

Deterministic evolutionary game dynamics in finite populations.

Evolutionary game dynamics describes the spreading of successful strategies in a population of reproducing individuals. Typically, the microscopic definition of strategy spreading is stochastic such that the dynamics becomes deterministic only in infinitely large populations. Here, we present a microscopic birth-death process that has a fully deterministic strong selection limit in well-mixed p...

Evolutionary Games

Since the workshop held at BIRS in 2006 on the same topic, evolutionary game theory has continued to expand in the directions identified there as well as in several new directions. There seems to be a tendency to reach out from the founding concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy, towards related concepts such as continuously stable strategies and stochastically stable strategies, towards ...
